Alexandra Da-Cunha Biography

Alexandre da Cunha, born in 1969 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is a distinguished Brazilian-British artist known for his innovative approach to sculpture and wall-mounted works, often utilizing found objects to create his art. His journey into the art world began with his education in Brazil at the Fundação Armando Alvares Penteado (FAAP) in São Paulo, where he completed his studies in 1996. Seeking to further his education and immerse himself in a different cultural and artistic environment, da Cunha moved to the United Kingdom in the late 1990s. There, he pursued and completed his Master's degree at the Chelsea College of Art in London in 2000, after studying at the Royal College of Art in London in 1999. Da Cunha's work is characterized by a unique blend of materials and concepts, often incorporating everyday or found objects into his sculptures and installations. This approach not only challenges traditional notions of what constitutes art but also invites viewers to reconsider the value and potential of mundane materials. His art is deeply influenced by a variety of movements and styles, including the Neo-Concrete Brazilian art movement of the late 1950s, Op art, and modernist architecture, particularly that found in major Brazilian cities. Additionally, da Cunha frequently explores themes of national identity through the use of flags, iconography, and other symbols. Throughout his career, Alexandre da Cunha has held numerous solo exhibitions across the globe, showcasing the breadth and depth of his artistic practice. Notable exhibitions include "Broken" at Thomas Dane Gallery in London and "Quebrada" at auroras in São Paulo, Brazil, both in 2023; "Duplex" at Brighton CCA in Brighton, England, in 2021; and "Arena" at Thomas Dane Gallery in Naples, Italy, in 2020. His work has also been featured in significant group exhibitions, such as "Each now, is the time, the space" at Lismore Castle in Ireland in 2024 and "Linhas Tortas" at Mendes Wood DM in São Paulo, Brazil, in 2023. Da Cunha's contributions to the art world extend beyond his own creations. He has curated exhibitions, such as "Sol" at Marli Matsumoto Arte Contemporânea in São Paulo, Brazil, and "Voyage" at Galeria Bergamin & Gomide in São Paulo, Brazil, showcasing his keen eye for curation and his commitment to fostering dialogue within the art community. His work has earned him several grants and residencies, including an Artist in Residence position at the Headland Center for the Arts in Marin, CA, in 2010, and a residency at Camden Arts Centre's Artists' Studio in London, England, in 2009. Da Cunha's art is held in several major public collections worldwide, a testament to his impact and recognition in the contemporary art scene. His innovative use of materials, combined with his exploration of cultural and national identity, makes his work a significant contribution to the discourse on contemporary sculpture and installation art. Living and working between London, England, and São Paulo, Brazil, Alexandre da Cunha continues to push the boundaries of sculpture and installation art. His ability to transform everyday objects into profound artistic statements speaks to his creativity and critical eye, making him a pivotal figure in contemporary art. Through his work, da Cunha invites us to see the extraordinary in the ordinary, challenging our perceptions and encouraging a deeper engagement with the world around us.
